When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth erupting—whichever comes first. This early visit is crucial for checking your child's oral development, spotting potential issues early, and helping parents learn how to care for baby teeth.

Early dental visits also help your child get comfortable in a dental setting, reducing fear and anxiety in the future. Regular checkups every six months after the first visit are typically recommended to maintain good oral health.

What to Expect During the Visit

The pediatric dentist will examine your infant to ensure that their jaw and teeth are developing appropriately. If your child is unable to or prefers not to remain in the dental chair alone, you will be seated in the chair with your child on your lap during the visit. We will evaluate the mouth for any injuries, cavities, or other conditions. The dentist will clean your child's teeth and provide you with recommendations for daily oral hygiene after that portion of the examination concludes.
  • Avoid scheduling during nap or mealtime.
Choose a time when your child is alert, rested, and generally in a good mood.
  • Offer a light, healthy meal beforehand.
A full tummy helps your child stay comfortable and focused during the visit.
  • Have your child brush their teeth before leaving.
A clean mouth helps the dentist do a better exam and sets a good example for oral hygiene.
  • Keep the mood upbeat and playful.
Please talk about the dentist as a friend who helps keep their smile bright and healthy.
  • Stay calm and supportive.
If your child gets nervous or upset, stay patient and let the dental team guide you both through it.
  • Celebrate the visit afterward.
Whether it's a sticker, a trip to the park, or extra story time, a small reward can help build positive associations.
