Dental X-Rays for
Kids Near
You!

Our pediatric dentist and dental team are dedicated to giving our patients the most modern, secure, and efficient treatment choices. We utilize dental X-rays, which have shorter exposure times and smaller sensors. This reduces the radiation exposure of our young patients during X-rays.

X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool. Without X-rays, our dentist and staff would not be able to assess the teeth, surrounding bone, and tissue.  Certain dental diseases may go unnoticed in the absence of X-rays. These unidentified problems have the potential to develop into significant ones in the future.

Digital X-rays provide the fine information required to identify issues early on. Early detection and treatment of dental problems make your child's therapy more comfortable and frequently less involved.

Why Are Dental
X-rays
Important?

Pediatric dentists use dental radiography for diagnosis and prevention. X-rays detect dental decay and disorders that cannot be seen. Dental X-rays can help the pediatric dentist detect if the primary teeth are being removed quickly enough for the permanent teeth to erupt correctly. Dental x-rays also show the dentist if all adult teeth are below the gum line, if any are missing, or if any are coming in. Dental radiography also helps the dentist estimate the date of un-erupted wisdom teeth or determine if they are impacted or unable to come in due to bone structure inhibition or other teeth. Finally, dental X-rays help dentists predict orthodontic needs for children.

How Often Do Kids
Need Dental
X-rays?

Kids typically need dental X-rays once a year, but the frequency can vary based on their oral health, age, and risk of cavities. Children with a higher risk of tooth decay may need them more often—every six months—while those with a low risk may need them less frequently. X-rays help dentists spot issues early, like cavities, infections, or problems with incoming teeth. Kids Dentists use the lowest radiation dose possible and only take X-rays when necessary for proper diagnosis.

How Safe Is Dental
Radiography for
Kids?

Dental radiography is generally safe for kids. Modern X-ray technology uses very low radiation levels, and safety measures like lead aprons and thyroid collars further reduce exposure. Dentists take X-rays only when necessary, balancing the small risk with the benefits of detecting problems early, such as cavities or jaw issues. When appropriately used, the health advantages of dental X-rays far outweigh the minimal radiation risks for children.

The pediatric dentist will also take precautions to prevent X-ray injury to your child's tissues and cells. The child will wear a lead vest/apron to avoid exposure. The dentist can now x-ray only select parts of the mouth while protecting the rest of the mouth and head. Dentists will cover non-x-rayed face portions using shields. While capturing an accurate image, high-speed digital film minimizes radiation exposure.

Ask the pediatric dentist in Redmond to go over the X-ray methods, processes, safety precautions, and equipment use if you have any questions or concerns about digital radiography and/or X-ray safety for your child.
