How Safe Is Dental
Radiography for Kids?
Dental radiography is generally safe for kids. Modern X-ray technology uses very low radiation levels, and safety measures like lead aprons and thyroid collars further reduce exposure. Dentists take X-rays only when necessary, balancing the small risk with the benefits of detecting problems early, such as cavities or jaw issues. When appropriately used, the health advantages of dental X-rays far outweigh the minimal radiation risks for children.
The pediatric dentist will also take precautions to prevent X-ray injury to your child's tissues and cells. The child will wear a lead vest/apron to avoid exposure. The dentist can now x-ray only select parts of the mouth while protecting the rest of the mouth and head. Dentists will cover non-x-rayed face portions using shields. While capturing an accurate image, high-speed digital film minimizes radiation exposure.
Ask the pediatric dentist in Redmond to go over the X-ray methods, processes, safety precautions, and equipment use if you have any questions or concerns about digital radiography and/or X-ray safety for your child.
